Wood Burning – Exploring a Hobby

I’ve always admired the rustic charm of wooden decor, especially when it comes to kitchen aesthetics. We’ve been wanting to try wood burning, and I couldn’t resist the urge to embark on a DIY adventure. After some research, I found the perfect wood burning kit and pre-cut wood slabs on Amazon to make a Mother’s Day gift.

The Walnut Hollow Versa Wood Burning Kit came with various tips for different designs, a sturdy handle, and clear instructions – perfect for a beginner like me.

Project Mother’s Day

With Mother’s Day fast approaching, we were eager to get started, I grabbed the burner, some farmhouse stencils and letter stencils and the pre-cut wood slabs I had ordered.

I used the stencils to sketch a border on one of the wood slabs. Next I combined the large word “Kitchen” from the farmhouse stencil, with a mixture of letters from the other stencils to add a stylized “Mom’s”. Don’t feel constrained by the stencils, mix and match if you need to achieve your design. The smell of burning wood filled the air as I carefully traced the lines with the heated tool. The process was actually relaxing, each stroke leaving a mark that would soon contribute to a unique piece of art for our kitchen.

As the wood burning progressed, I experimented with different tips to create textures and patterns and shading. Since this was my first time, it was all trial and error.

The pre-cut wood slabs proved to be a wise choice, saving me the hassle of sourcing, measuring and cutting the wood myself. Especially since Mother’s Day was fast approaching. They were of high quality and the bass wood provided an easy canvas for my design.

Finishing Touches – The Kids Get Involved

Once the wood burning was complete, I opted not to add a protective finish to the wood. Out of direct sunlight and cooktop, I think it will actually be fine for a long time.

Before I deemed my project complete, I decided to add a personal touch that would make it even more meaningful.

Turning the wood slabs over, I invited my kids to join in on the creative process. With a permanent marker, each of us carefully signed the back of the wood slabs.

I watched as my children carefully wrote their names, then I held their hand to help them burn in their signatures.. It was a beautiful way to immortalize our shared endeavor. We dated it “Mother’s Day 2023” with the small letter stencils.

Precious Memories, How They Linger

Finally, I arranged the finished piece on the kitchen wall. Now every time we look at that wood slab, I’m reminded of the precious memories shared with my kids during its creation.

Signing the back of the wood slabs with our names and adding the date was the perfect finishing touch, turning a DIY project into a cherished family keepsake. It’s a testament to the idea that crafting isn’t just about the end result but also about the memories and quality time spent along the way.

Diving into the world of wood burning artistry was a rewarding experience. Whether it’s for Mother’s Day, Christmas, or another day. The Walnut Hollow Versa Wood Burning Kit and Live Edge Basswood Planks from Amazon provided the perfect foundation for our project. If you’re looking to add a personal touch to your space, I highly recommend trying your hand at this DIY project – you might just discover a newfound love for crafting with wood.
