It has been a journey to slowly phase the plastic out of our kitchen. I started with our cooking utensils long ago and got some wooden spoons and spatulas. I knew I couldn’t throw them into the dishwasher and needed to wash them by hand. I also learned I needed to protect wooden kitchen tools by oiling and moisturizing them to seal them. Back then, I bought a big ol’ bottle of food grade mineral oil as recommended on the internet. Later to find, mineral oil is from petroleum and that was something we want to avoid when possible in products. I wanted something more natural and nontoxic.
I learned from a friend that you could use a mixture of beeswax and unrefined coconut oil to moisturize and seal cutting boards and wooden spoons! Those were two things I had on hand in my home. I know beeswax might not be as common (I had some from making beeswax candles), but you can find some easily on Amazon or from a local beekeeper! The beeswax pellets seem to work easier to scoop and measure, but you could definitely scrape some off of a block if thats what you have!
The mixture is as simple as measuring a 1 part beeswax to 3 part coconut oil amount and it doesn’t have to be exact. Next, you melt them together in a double broiler and let it cool after it has been melted and mixed. Make sure you use the jar or container that you will be storing it in (so you don’t have to transfer it.. that can get messy) and also that it is heat safe! I hope this helps you on your journey to make small changes in your home to create a healthier environment! Let me know if you make it and give it a try! It would also be a great homemade gift for someone that has many wooden kitchen items!
