In the pursuit of a lush, vibrant lawn that requires minimal maintenance, many homeowners are turning to alternative options that not only beautify their landscapes but also contribute to a healthier ecosystem. One such solution gaining popularity is the use of white clover, often blended with mini- or micro-clover. In this guide, we’ll delve into the benefits of a clover lawn, explore the advantages over traditional grass types like Bermuda grass, and discuss the ideal seeding ratio per acre for a thriving, low-maintenance green space.
The Appeal of Clover Lawns
Our big motivation to do a clover lawn is to reduce the mowing maintenance. We really don’t want to spend all our time mowing, which yields less fruit than gardening and growing food. Here are several advantages to switching to a clover lawn:
- Lower Maintenance Requirements:
Clover lawns, especially those featuring micro clover, boast lower maintenance needs compared to traditional grasses. They thrive in a variety of soil types, require less watering, and are less susceptible to diseases and pests. Clover lawns generally require less frequent mowing compared to Bermuda grass, saving both time and energy for homeowners. - Drought Tolerance:
One of the standout features of clover is its remarkable drought tolerance. In regions with sporadic rainfall or water restrictions, a clover lawn remains resilient, maintaining its verdant charm even during dry spells. While Bermuda grass requires ample watering to stay green and healthy, clover lawns can withstand drought conditions, maintaining their color and vitality with less water. - Nitrogen Fixation:
Clover is a nitrogen-fixing plant, meaning it forms a symbiotic relationship with soil bacteria to convert atmospheric nitrogen into a usable form for the plant. This natural process enriches the soil, reducing the need for synthetic fertilizers, making it an eco-friendly choice that promotes soil health. - Pollinator-Friendly:
Clover lawns are a haven for pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. This not only supports local biodiversity but also contributes to a healthier and more resilient garden ecosystem. - Weed Suppression:
Clover’s dense growth inhibits the development of many common lawn weeds. This natural weed suppression reduces the need for herbicides and promotes a healthier lawn overall.
Seeding Ratio for a Clover Lawn
You’ll see lots of opinions on the ‘perfect’ ratio of clover. Don’t sweat it too much. Achieving a balance of white and micro clover should lead to a successful, low-maintenance lawn. A recommended seeding ratio is approximately:
- White Clover (Trifolium repens): up to 10 pounds per acre.
- Mini Clover (Trifolium repens var. Pipolina): up to 2 pounds per acre.
This ratio provides a harmonious blend that delivers the benefits of both white and micro clover, creating a dense, attractive, and durable lawn.
Supplies
We spread our clover behind the mower with our Agri-Fab 45-0463 130-Pound Tow Behind Broadcast Spreader. We chose for seed the Outsidepride White Dutch Clover Seed – 50 LB bag and the White MiniClover 1 LB bag. You’ll see in the video for approximately 1 acre we used 10 LB of the White clover bag and only 1/5 of the mini-clover seed bag. These are tiny seeds so just barely opening the spreader to it’s lowest setting was more than enough to spread the seed properly. See the Videos Below to see how we did it.
Final Thoughts
In the quest for a lower maintenance lawn that contributes to the environment, the combination of white clover with micro clover emerges as a winning solution. With its drought tolerance, nitrogen-fixing capabilities, and reduced need for fertilizers and herbicides, a clover lawn is a practical and eco-friendly choice. By embracing the beauty and resilience of clover, homeowners can create a lush, vibrant landscape that requires less effort to maintain, leaving more time to enjoy the natural splendor of their green haven. It may not yet be Hobbiton, but it’s still home.
